Kefir is an excellent dairy food because it’s a fermented dairy drink. The fermentation is done with kefir “grains”. The grains are a mix of yeasts and probiotic bacteria and are full of an amino acid called tryptophan and they cause your body to produce a hormone called serotonin, which regulates your mood. The more serotonin your body makes the less anxious you are. Drink about 1 cup per day to help reduce that anxious feeling. This also releases a compound called GABA (Gamma Aminobutyric acid). GABA is a neurotransmitter that keeps neurons in the brain from talking with each other and this helps keep your brain (and mind) quiet.
The probiotics in kefir can help help eliminate harmful bacteria in your gut and colon. Kefir can help maintain blood sugar because the bacteria in kefir digest some of the natural sugars found in kefir. As a bonus, they also digest the lactose (a natural sugar) that is present making kefir more friendly to those who are lactose intolerant.
The lactic acid produced by the bacteria is an antimicrobial agent, which means it can kill other bacteria and fungi in your gut. This can clear the way for the good bacteria to come in and establish themselves by killing off harmful bacteria.
Despite some myths, eggs are good for you. In fact they are very good for you. Eggs are high in iron and biotin. They also have a compound called choline that is great at reducing inflammation especially in the brain. Choline can also help block the absorption of fat from foods, which makes eggs a food you may want to consider adding to your diet if you’re trying to lose weight.
Although high in cholesterol, most of it is the good cholesterol that we need, which is HDL (High Density Lipoprotein) cholesterol. We can get around 70% of our recommended daily intake of cholesterol from one egg.
Eggs pair great with foods that are high in calcium. Eggs have vitamin D and we need vitamin D in order to absorb calcium. Broccoli works great with eggs because broccoli has a form of calcium that’s easy for us to absorb. This can help with seasonal effectivness disorder (SAD), anxiety, osteoarthritis and keep your nerves healthy.
Yogurt gives you plenty of Calcium, Riboflavin and very beneficial probiotics. It makes a great snack food at any point of the day. It also contains tryptophan, which causes your body to produce serotonin and calm you down. You can mix yogurt with all kinds of things from ground Flax seeds and walnuts to fruits. Your best bet is to get plain yogurt so you can control how much stuff you want to put in. Yogurts that come with added fruits can have a lot of sugar in them. Plain yogurts give you more options and much more control over your own health.
Greek Yogurt ★★
Greek Yogurt is different from regular yogurt because it has some of the whey removed from by being strained through a cloth or filter. They whey is the milky or watery liquid that hangs around on the top of yogurts. This also removes a good amount of the lactose and sugar. One 6 ounce serving contains 15-20 grams of protein, which is more than what regular yogurt has. It has half the carbs that regular yogurt has. Greek yogurt contains less fat than regular yogurts as well. The combination of these things is what made Greek yogurt so popular in recent years. This makes Greek yogurts more attractive to people who are vegan or vegetarian and are looking for ways to get the extra protein that they would normally get from meats.
So overall Greek yogurt contains more protein, less carbs, fats, sugars and lactose compared to regular yogurt but it’s lacking in calcium.
